Electrolyzed Water, Sodium Chloride, Hypochorous Acid (0.02%)

What is hypochlorous acid?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a gentle acid naturally produced by the body’s white blood cells as part of the immune response. It possesses powerful antimicrobial properties, effectively neutralizing bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Renowned for its safety and efficacy, HOCl is increasingly incorporated into healthcare, first aid, and skincare products to cleanse, disinfect, and promote healing—without causing irritation.

Why does hypochlorous acid have a slight chlorine smell?

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) carries a faint chlorine scent because it shares a close chemical relationship with chlorine. Think about the sharp, familiar smell you notice at a swimming pool—that’s chlorine. What you’re actually smelling is often chlorine gas (Cl₂) or other chlorinated compounds, which can be a bit harsh on the nose.

You can think of hypochlorous acid as chlorine’s “chill cousin.” It’s like chlorine hung out with water (H₂O) and mellowed out to become HOCl. While less aggressive than pure chlorine, it still carries a bit of chlorine’s signature scent. So when you catch that slight chlorine-like aroma from hypochlorous acid, it’s just a gentle reminder of their family connection.

How is hypochlorous acid different from bleach?

Both hypochlorous acid and bleach belong to the same chemical family and are used for cleaning, but they serve very different purposes. Hypochlorous acid is much milder and safer, making it perfect for sensitive uses like healthcare and skincare. Bleach, on the other hand, is the heavy-duty “no-nonsense” cleaner for tough jobs.

One key difference is pH: bleach is extremely alkaline, with a pH around 13 to 14, which makes it harsh and potentially irritating. Hypochlorous acid, however, is close to neutral at around pH 6, meaning it’s gentle on skin and surfaces while still effectively killing germs.
